When most people think about a diet to lose a fat gut, they will normally cut back on lots of calories, hoping that this will do the trick. I used to think in the same way. After all it is by eating too many calories that stomach fat starts to appear, so it would seem to make sense that if you eat less calories, the less fat there will be. After spending some time reseaching this topic for my own benefit, I realised that this really was the wrong way to approach things.

Our bodies are pretty complex and they are designed to work in a certain way. Regardless what you want, your body’s priorities are different. Let me give you an example about how our body uses food. Your body will use what it needs to function properly from the food that you eat. Anything that your body does not remove through waste, will be stored as fat. Body fat is just reserves of energy, something like an emergency fund. The traditional method of the way we eat is to eat around 3 times a day. However your body can only use a certain amount of calories at any one go. So if these 3 meals contain more calories than your body needs, then some of these calories will be stored as fat.

If on the other hand you want to lose fat from the stomach and not store any calories, then you need to feed the body smaller portions but on a more regular basis. This means eating 5 or 6 times a day. Because the meals are small, very little will be stored as fat. The other plus side is that your metabolism realises that it is getting fed every few hours, and it will be constantly burning calories. The flipside of the coin is that if there is too much time between meals, then your metabolism will slow down. This is not going to help you get rid of gut fat or any other type of fat.

This process is called the “starvation mode”. This was great when we used to live in caves and food could be scarce. The body’s way of not wasting energy was to slow down the metabolism. The bad news is that in today’s world where food is plentiful, out bodies have not evolved enough to understand this. Evolution takes a long time, and our bodies work pretty much in the same way as they did tens of thousands of years ago.

Basically what this means is that if you want to lose fat from your stomach and you start to miss meals in order to reduce your calorie intake, your body will think that food is scarce, and slow down the metabolism. This means that fewer calories will be burned, resulting in a lot less fat loss. Your body does not care that you are trying to lose weight, it will just think that you are starving, and take steps to combat this. So if you want to lose body fat or stomach fat, it is important that you don’t cut out too many calories from your diet.

Eat smaller meals more often throughout the day, but make sure that the food that you eat contains quality calories. This means avoiding things like sugar and unhealthy fat. Replace these foods with fruit and fresh vegetables. If your goal is to get rid of fat gut, then just taking this single step will speed up your metabolism. That means you can begin to burn more calories without even having to start an exercise program. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t exercise, because by working out, you will burn more fat, which will result in you losing your gut.
